Sipsey River

The Sipsey River is the most picturesque waterway in Alabama and may also be one the most beautiful areas in the southeast. It is entirely contained within the Bankhead National Forest and offers an abundance of natural beauty. Due to water depths, the best time of the year to experience the Sipsey is during the winter and early spring. Water levels during the summer and fall months are often not conducive to a good paddling experience, but if a good rain comes along, levels may rise enough for a good day outing. The river runs thru canyons, steep hillsides, and forests. There are numerous banks and sandbars ideal for picnics and camping. The Sipsey is a fun and enjoyable class 1 river but can have some “tricky” areas during high water times that should be respected. When the water-level of the Sipsey River is too low to paddle, I suggest a hike down the beautiful Sipsey River Trail. This is a marked hiking trail that allows you to see the awesome river and canyons, and gives access to numerous camping sites. Travel time to the Sipsey River is approximately two hours, so be ready for an awesome, but long, day or take advantage of the riverside camping. Any time you can spend in the Bankhead National Forest will be worth it!
We will be opperating on this river when the leaves fall off the trees.
